Moving into a new home is an exciting experience. However, it can be unsettling for many pets, which often take a while to adjust to new surroundings and need to be eased into the process. Below are some simple ways to make the transition to your dream home safe and easy for your furry friends.
Pack appropriately – Many pets do not like change. To help your pets adjust during the home packing process, try bringing in moving boxes early and keeping pets in a familiar room that will be packed last.
Keep pets away from the chaos – While the move is taking place, it is best to take your pet to a friend’s house or board them at a kennel. If this is not possible, make sure pets are in the quietest area possible to reduce stress. If you are keeping them at home during the move, check on them regularly. To keep their routine, try to feed and walk them at the same time you normally would.
Plan ahead – Before you move, determine a designated spot for your pets’ crates, bowls, beds, and toys. It is also a great idea to research pet parks near your new home. To find dog parks, click here.
Create an overnight bag – Pack your pet an easily accessible overnight bag that includes some food, toys, grooming materials, kitty litter, etc. to sustain them for a day or two while you unpack some things.
Let them settle in – When you arrive at your new home, introduce your pets to one room at a time rather than letting them loose to explore. Once they seem comfortable in one room, take them to other rooms in the home.
